The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop and Server editions, Ubuntu 9.10 Server for Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) and Amazon’s EC2, and Ubuntu Netbook Remix, continuing Ubuntu’s tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

Read more about the features of Ubuntu 9.10 in the following press releases:

Desktop edition    http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-910
Server edition     http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-910-server-edition

Ubuntu 9.10 will be supported for 18 months on both desktops and servers. Users requiring a longer support lifetime on the server may choose to continue using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS, with security support until 2013, rather than upgrading to 9.10.

Thanks to the efforts of the global translation community, Ubuntu is available in 25 languages. For a list of supported languages and detailed translation statistics for these and other languages, see:

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Translations/ReleaseLanguages/9.10

Ubuntu 9.10 includes the first official release of Ubuntu Server images for UEC and for Amazon’s EC2, giving you everything you need for rapid deployment of Ubuntu instances in a cloud computing environment. UEC images, and information on running Ubuntu 9.10 on EC2, are available at:

VMware has just released a Beta 2 build of its very popular and free server virtualization software, VMware Server 2.0 (build 84186).

What’s New

New features and enhancements in the VMware Server 2.0 Beta 2 release:

Updated VMware Infrastructure (VI) Web Access management interface: With the faster performance, improved stability and broader range of configuration options, the VI Web Access management interface provides a simple, flexible, intuitive and productive management experience. In addition, embedded help files are context sensitive based on the task being performed.

Independent virtual machine console: With the new VMware Remote Console, you can access your virtual machine consoles independent of the VI Web Access management interface plus resize the virtual machine console windows as needed.

Support for USB 2.0 devices: Transfer data at faster data rates from USB 2.0 devices.

Multi-tiered permissions: Configure different levels of permissions to access virtual machines in different ways, including browsing, interacting, configuring and administering virtual machines.

New hardware editors: Edit and add devices such as USB 2.0 devices and legacy devices such as floppy drives, serial and parallel ports.

Automatically start your virtual machines: Select which virtual machines that you want to automatically start when VMware Server starts. In addition, there is also an option to boot the virtual machine directly into the BIOS Setup Screen.

Link to Virtual Appliance Marketplace: Access thousands of pre-built, pre-configured, ready-to-run enterprise applications packaged with an operating system inside a virtual machine. This speeds up time to value and simplifies software development, distribution, and management.

Existing VMware Server 2.0 Beta features

New operating system support: The broadest operating system support of any host-based virtualization platform currently available, including support for Windows Vista Business Edition and Ultimate Edition (guest only), Windows Server 2008, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 and Ubuntu 7.10 in 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

More scalable virtual machines:Support for up to 8 GB of RAM (up from 3.6 GB in Server 1.0) per virtual machine, 10 virtual network interface cards and up to two virtual SMP (vSMP) processors per virtual machine.

64-bit guest operating system support:Use 64-bit guest operating systems on 64-bit hardware to enable more scalable and higher performing computing solutions.

Support for Virtual Machine Interface (VMI): This feature enables transparent paravirtualization, in which a single binary version of the operating system can run either on native hardware or in paravirtualized mode to improve performance in specific Linux environments.

Support for VIX API 1.5: This feature provides a programming interface for automating virtual machine and guest operations.

GNOME 2.22 is the latest version of the GNOME Desktop: a popular, multi-platform desktop environment for your computer. GNOME’s focus is ease of use, stability, and first class internationalization and accessibility support. GNOME is Free and Open Source Software and provides all of the common tools computer users expect of a modern computing environment, such as email, groupware, web browsing, file management, multimedia, and games. Furthermore, GNOME provides a flexible and powerful platform for software developers, both on the desktop and in mobile applications.

The GNOME Desktop is released every six months and contains many new features, improvements, bug fixes, and translations. GNOME 2.22 continues this tradition. To learn more about GNOME and the qualities that distinguish it from other computer desktop environments (such as usability, accessibility, internationalization, and freedom) visit the About GNOME page on our website.

The GNOME Project’s focus on users and usability continues in GNOME 2.22 with its hundreds of bug fixes and user-requested improvements.

What’s News?

GNOME 2.22 introduces a new application, Cheese. Cheese lets you take photos and make videos using your computer’s webcam. You can apply a range of different effects like mauve, noir/blanc, shagadelic, and warp. You can share these photos and videos with your friends, load them into F-Spot, or set them as your account photo.

GNOME 2.22 introduces window compositing on capable platforms. Fitting with GNOME’s “keeping it simple” policy, the features are very low key. The most noticeable changes are drop shadows on windows, live previews when switching windows with Alt+Tab, and transparency effects.

GNOME 2.22 introduces GVFS: a new network-transparent virtual filesystem layer for GTK+. GVFS is designed to overcome the shortcomings of the older GNOME-VFS system. Improvements over GNOME-VFS include remembering login credentials for the entire session and being more resilient to failures. Many GNOME applications are already using GVFS, including all of the core applications.

GNOME’s Movie Player now offers improved support for DVD playback as well as support for digital television (DVB). Also appearing in 2.22 is a selection of new plugins, including support for MythTV, Youtube, and Tracker-based searching. This release also features playlist sharing and the ability to select subtitles for files.

Evolution continues to be improved with new support for Google Calendars and custom message labels (tagging) for your email.

New in GNOME 2.22 is the Remote Desktop Viewer. This application complements the existing remote desktop server support in GNOME. It features the ability to discover machines on the local network and bookmark your favorites.

The keyboard layout and keyboard accessibility preferences have been merged into one dialog, putting every keyboard setting you need in one place. Desktop Keyboard Shortcuts remain separate.

GNOME 2.22 also features many bug fixes and user-required enhancements from the last six months of development, including:

directly open Evolution contacts in Deskbar;

network multiplayer in Chess;

download notifications in Epiphany;

LZMA (7-zip) support in Archive Manager;

inhibit automatic suspend and hibernation while burning CDs;

Document Viewer is now faster and uses less memory;

Document Viewer can also now support page transitions in PDF Slideshows;

Tomboy can now organize your notes into notebooks;

Sound Juicer now supports more metadata, including disc number and year;

extensive improvements to Calculator‘s precision and usability;

Ubuntu 8.04 codename Hardy Heron alpha 4 was officially released 2 days back and is now available for download. This alpha 4 released offers an early look at some of the features that will be included in the final 8.04 release, which is scheduled for April 2008.

Personally I took the opportunity to test it on my VMware Workstation 6 today. Please note that please do not enable network setup during Ubuntu installation, the system try to locate for some update that make me wait for more than half an hour. Basically I have found 2 bug in this testing so far.

The first bug I was found is Firefox, according to Ubuntu 8.04 alpha 4 I suppose to have Firefox 3 beta 2 but it’s running on Firefox 2.0.0.10.

World clock applet that integrating the features of the intlclock applet, the GNOME panel clock in Alpha 4 can display the time and weather in multiple locations. This is the second bug that I found. For Sepang Asia/Kuala Lumpur, it’s suppose to set to GMT+8:00 but the system display GMT+13:00.

With Alpha 4, PolicyKit integration is visible in the administrative user interfaces. PolicyKit makes it possible to run administrative applications as a normal user, and have them get a particular set of extra privileges for certain operations, which allows fine-grained control over user permissions and enhances usability, as well as eliminating the security implications of running the whole application as root.

Vinagre :- The new Vinagre VNC client is installed by default in Alpha 4, replacing xvnc4viewer. Vinagre allows the user to view multiple machines simultaneously, can discover VNC servers on the network via Avahi, and can keep track of recently used and favorite connections. Avahi SSH Server Browser & Avahi VNC Server Browser

Remote Desktop Viewer version 0.4.90

OpenOffice version 2.3

Seahorse is a GNOME application for managing encryption keys. It also integrates with nautilus, gedit and other places for encryption operations. With alpha 4, it’s running on version 2.21.4

During the computer logon, the ‘Ubuntu Desktop Search’ will initialize indexing tracker.

The GNOME System Monitor has a revamped “Resources” tab, with Cairo graphs that scroll and scale smoothly, and brand new widgets. With alpha 4, it’s running on version 2.21.5.

Basically, I think the overall are pretty good but I’m not really tested in details. I’m looking forward for the Ubuntu 8.04 official release.
