Another mile stone for Canonical teams. Good jobs!

The Ubuntu team is pleased to announce Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop and Server, continuing Ubuntu’s tradition of integrating the latest and greatest open source technologies into a high-quality, easy-to-use Linux distribution.

Features:

Productivity tools: Ubuntu supports all of your favourite web-based mail programs like Yahoo(TM) or Gmail (TM). But for the office, Evolution provides all the calendering, contacts and full function office email you need. Pidgin IM also puts you in instant touch with colleagues and integrates with your personal IM services simply and easily.

Browsing: Includes Mozilla’s Firefox 3 as the default browser. Faster, safer and themed browsing for users.

Photos: Upload from your camera or phone to F-Spot and manage, tag, share and sort your photos and upload easily to you favourite social networking sites.

Music and video: Plug in your PSP, iPod, MP3 player; share playlists with your friends; buy in the creative commons online music stores, stream more live radio and content from the BBC and plug in more devices with UPnP.

Office applications: Word processing, spreadsheets and presentations can all be delivered through Open Office. And, they completely integrate with the proprietary office applications out there. The big difference is that they are free.

Accessibility: At the core of the Ubuntu philosophy is the belief that computing is for everyone and access should be free and complete whatever your economic or physical circumstances. Ubuntu is one of the most accessible desktop operating systems around.
Read more about the features of Ubuntu 8.10 in the following press releases:

Desktop edition http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-8.10-desktop
Server edition http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-8.10-server

Ubuntu 8.10 will be supported for 18 months on both desktops and servers. Users requiring a longer support lifetime may choose to continue using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS rather than upgrading to or installing 8.10.

Ubuntu 8.10 is also the basis for new 8.10 releases of Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and UbuntuStudio:

To download Ubuntu 8.10, or obtain CDs, visit:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu

Because Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is a long-term support release, users of that release will not be offered an automatic upgrade to 8.10 via Update Manager. For instructions on upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10, see:

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

As always, upgrades to the latest version of Ubuntu are entirely free of charge.

We recommend that all users read the release notes, which document caveats and workarounds for known issues. They are available at:

According to MSNBC, open source software supplier Red Hat is racking up growth figures that much of techdom might envy. Sales rose 32%, to $157 million, in the quarter ended May 31, and profits climbed a respectable 7%.

One possible suitor is virtualization software company VMware (VMW), which some industry executives says is on the lookout for an operating system to add to its portfolio. Former VMware CEO Diane Greene, ousted by her board in July, had set up meetings with Red Hat in part to position VMware as friendly to open source and possibly as a prelude to a buyout discussion, according to a person familiar with the conversations. Representatives of both companies declined to comment.

KDE 4.1 was finally released to the public today. After all the controversy since the release of KDE 4.0, I’m happy to announce that KDE 4.1 simply rocks.

KDE 4.1 packages are available for Kubuntu and several other popular distributions. If there are no prebuilt binaries yet for your distro of choice, you can compile the software from the available source packages. A live CD image is also available should you wish to try the new desktop without altering your existing installation.

The introduction of KDE 4 marked the introduction of the new Plasma desktop, which provides not only the panel that you interact with, but also widgets (or “plasmoids”) that extended the desktop further. In KDE 4.1, one of the most welcome changes to Plasma is the return of multiple and resizable panels from KDE 3. Now you can configure your panels by clicking on the Plasma icon (by default it’s on the right edge of the panel), which brings up a series of sliders for adjusting the panel’s height and position. Also within this configuration control is the return of a way to reposition panel contents by simply grabbing objects with your mouse and pulling them to where you’d like them.

One of the most controversial announcements during the KDE 4.1 development cycle was the reported removal of icons for the desktop. In actuality, desktop icons are not missing from the new version, they’re just handled differently. This version introduces a Folder View plasmoid, which is a container you can place on the desktop that can show the contents of any directory. Most distributions set one up in the default configuration to show the contents of the desktop folder, but you are no longer limited to having the contents of just the desktop folder displayed on your desktop — you can add several instances of Folder View, each showing a different directory.

As far as eye candy, KDE 4.1 looks simply stunning. While its theme uses the same foundation as 4.0, the developers have improved it with many tweaks. Desktop plasmoids no longer have extremely thick borders, transparent objects appear cleaner, the KDE login manager and splash screens have a new theme, and a tweaked version of the Oxygen window border (called Ozone) is included and better blends into the styles. Plasma itself has also been given its own theme engine (separate from the KDE desktop theme) with several different themes already built in.

To be continue ….

Today, Novell has announced the availability of its second service pack (SP2) for SUSE Linux Enterprise 10 containing enhancements in virtualization, management, hardware enablement and interoperability.

Important Update:

Virtualization. With Service Pack 2, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 becomes the first and only Xen-based virtualization solution with full support from Microsoft for Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2003 guests, and the live migration of those guests across physical machines. In addition to the latest version of the leading open source hypervisor, Xen 3.2, SLES 10 SP2 ships with an updated version of virt-manager. This virtual machine management tool provides a summary of all live domains, along with detailed graphical views of virtual machine utilization and performance over time. These virtualization enhancements offer enterprises increased flexibility, and enable them to more quickly and easily manage both their physical and virtual systems.

Systems Management. SLES 10 SP2 includes updates to the YaST management toolset, including first-boot enhancements and support for the Internet Storage Name Service (iSNS) protocol. It also includes updates to the YaST2 network and storage modules to support new bridge devices, FICON devices for mainframes, and VLANs, as well as support the online resizing of ext3 partitions.

High Availability. SLES 10 SP2 includes the latest open source failover subsystem technology, Heartbeat 2.1.3, and adds a resource agent for iSCSI initiator, as well as hooks to SAP resource agents. It also includes updated tools for creating and managing file systems using OCFS2, offering improved support for simultaneous write access, and also offers new capabilities for managing XFS and ReiserFS file systems.

Network Management. Included in SLES 10 SP2 is NetworkManager 0.7.0, for setting up and configuring active network connections. The product also includes support for IPv6, the next generation network layer for packet-switched internetworks.

Red Hat is proving you can make money from Open Source and Linux.

Red Hat Inc. said Thursday its fourth-quarter profit rose 7 percent as the software distributor worked to expand the footprint of its open source products with costly internal investments.

New CEO James Whitehurst believes Red Hat is now ready to continue rapid growth through an economic downturn as the Raleigh-based company pitches its free software to organizations looking to cut their tech budgets.

“It’s my hypothesis for why we continue to see robust demand while others seem to be having issues,” Whitehurst said in an interview. “We’re known for value, and when you’re looking to cut budgets, we’re a logical name that comes to mind.”

Unlike Microsoft Corp., Red Hat makes money from its Linux operating system and other software by selling subscriptions for service.

Red Hat said it earned $22 million, or 10 cents per share, in its first quarter under new CEO James Whitehurst, compared to $20.5 million, also 10 cents per share, a year earlier.

Red Hat said its revenue rose 27 percent to $141.5 million in the quarter ending Feb. 29.

The earnings report was in line with expectations of analysts polled by Thomson Financial, who on average predicted the company earned 10 cents per share on revenue of $141.1 million. Excluding one-time items, Red Hat said it earned $42.7 million, or 20 cents per share, while analysts expected earnings per share of 19 cents on the same basis.

In after-hours trading Thursday, Red Hat shares rose $1.29, or 7.4 percent, after closing the regular session at $17.53.

Rising subscriptions and revenue came at the expense of costly internal investments in engineering, sales and marketing. Sales and marketing expenses rose 31 percent to $52 million while research and development costs rose 32 percent to $26.3 million, Red Hat said.

Charlie Peters, Red Hat’s executive vice president and chief financial officer, said the return on investments indicate the company has room to grow.

“This is an important validation of our business model, since we believe that we’re still in the early phase of open source adoption,” Peters said on a conference call with analysts.

Peters said he expects Red Hat to earn between 78 cents and 82 cents per share this year, after adjustments for taxes and stock compensation, on revenue of $665 million to $680 million. Analysts polled by Thomson had forecast comparable earnings: 85 cents per share on revenue of $637 million.

The company said it repurchased some 3.7 million shares of stock for about $66 million, reinvesting some of its operating cash flow. After adjusting for stock compensation and tax expenses, cash flow from operations totaled $71.6 million in the quarter — about 50 percent of revenue.

When Whitehurst took over as CEO at the beginning of January, he said he wanted to go on the offensive against larger rivals Oracle Corp. and Microsoft. Oracle announced in 2006 that it would sell service subscriptions to Red Hat products at a lower price.

Whitehurst said Thursday that Oracle’s decision hasn’t had any meaningful impact. All but one of Red Hat’s top 100 customers renewed with the company this year, and the lone loss didn’t go to Oracle, he said.

“We’re seeing them in the market, but we don’t see them winning in the market,” he said.

Former CEO Matthew Szulik stepped down at the end of 2007 to deal with family health issues. He continues to work as chairman of the company’s board of directors.
