Though it will definitely command a hefty price tag, at a stock clock speed of 3.33GHz and Intel Turbo Boost speeds at 3.45GHz (all cores) and 3.6GHz (single core), you can bet this new Core i7 is one hot-rod of a quad-core CPU. In the pages ahead, we’ll wind it out around the test track and show you what the fastest desktop processor on the planet can do when it’s tuned up for a touch more horsepower at the factory and made ready for production.

Intel Quad Core processors is coming soon – AMD ‘Shanghai’

According to The Register,

Today, x64 chip maker Advanced Micro Devices will launch its “Shanghai” quad-core Opteron processors for servers and workstations, concurrent with its annual financial analyst day meeting and ahead of schedule by AMD’s reckoning.

The new chip – which offers more computing power, less heat dissipation, and better bang for the buck than its “Barcelona” replacement – closes some of the gaps that rival Intel has opened up with its Xeon x64 chips. And it gives AMD a chance to get its business back on track and get its server partners somewhat enthusiastic about AMD after a number of them got burned by the chip maker’s delay in getting its initial quad-core chips out the door last year.

That gave Intel an opening to chew into market share gains that AMD made with single-core and dual-core Opterons since the product was launched in April 2003. And with a revamped, Core-based product line, the Xeons certainly have done that, despite some technical reasons why the Opteron design is better.

The Opterons were launched to much fanfare as the first 64-bit x86-compatible processor, and one with a funky interconnect called HyperTransport that looks an awful lot like the QuickPath Interconnect that Intel hopes to start rolling out in servers early next year and which makes its debut in the Core i7 processors any day now. While the tier one server vendors were a little cold to the Opterons at first, IBM played around a bit with one machine, and then Sun Microsystems said it would partner with AMD to create a new “Galaxy” server line, followed by Hewlett-Packard, which created Opteron variants in its ProLiant rack and BladeSystem blade server lines.

Please check The Register for more information.

Codenamed Dunnington, it will include all six cores on the same piece of silicon. That’s in contrast to Intel’s quad-core processors, which are split across two separate dies.

The Xeon 7400 Series, to give Dunnington its official title, will sport 16MB of shared level 3 cache and will be backwards compatible with the Xeon 7300 socket.

Intel is pitching the Xeon 7400 as the “virtualisation platform of choice”. It’s expected to give Intel the performance edge over AMD’s “Barcelona” Opteron processors, which have four cores on the same die.

Dunnington will be the last of the Penryn design processors, before the company moves to its Nehalem architecture later this year, which will adopt the company’s new Core i7 branding.

These new processors are:

There was no news on price or exactly when these new chips will start tipping up in our business class PCs, but it can’t be far away.

By introduce a new processors to desktop market, AMD hope most of the customer choose AMD instead of other competitor.

I’m using Intel Quad core processor for some times ago and I’m just wondering when can I have an Intel’s Quad-core for laptop. Yes, it’s officially announced “Aug 2008” by Sujan Kamran, regional marketing manager for client platforms at Intel in Singapore.

Referring to Yahoo! news,

Intel will release it’s first quad-core processor for laptops next month, rounding out a broad update to its mobile computing platform.

“We’re bringing quad-core to mobile in August,” said Sujan Kamran, regional marketing manager for client platforms at Intel in Singapore. Kamran declined to disclose specifics of the quad-core chip, which will carry Intel’s Core 2 Extreme moniker.

Getting a quad-core processor into a laptop is more about bragging rights than a genuine boost in performance. Very little PC software is designed to take advantage of multiple cores and it’s unclear what performance benefits a quad-core chip would offer over a dual-core chip, such as the 3.06GHz Core 2 Extreme QX9100.

While official details of the upcoming quad-core chip are scarce, Australian PC maker Pioneer Computers is taking preorders for laptops based on an unreleased quad-core mobile chip, the 2.53GHz Core 2 Extreme QX9300.

The chip is advertised as a A$1,449 (US$1,390) upgrade to Pioneer Computers’ DreamBook Style 9008 laptop. But adding a quad-core processor to the laptop doesn’t come cheap: the cost of the upgrade is more than the laptop’s A$1,399 basic price.
