Asustek’s new touch panel notebooks are expected to take advantage of Windows 7, said the sources. Asustek showed concept notebooks featuring two touch panels during Computex 2008.

AU Optronics (AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) are planning to launch 11.6-inch notebook panels in February next year, which along with 12.1-inch make possible candidate sizes for the upcoming touch panel notebooks, noted the sources, adding that Asustek has not yet decided what size its notebook will be.

Asus has launched a 15.6in touchscreen desktop PC, dubbed the Eee Top.

It’s come with 1GB of memory, 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor, 160GB hard disk, built-in 1.3 megapixel webcam, a set of stereo speakers, wired keyboard, mouse, Sun Microsystem’s Star Office and Microsoft Windows XP.

The Asus Eee All-In-One touchscreen is available for pre-order now on Play.com for £399.99 with free delivery, and is due for release on 20 November.

The new Eee PC 701SD will be built in a similar chassis to the 901 but lacks the rounded edges. The lid has the new Eee logo in the top right corner and is covered in a black and white matte finish.

The touch pad button has a divot separating the right and left click button, which if you recall, the original 701 did not. Other than that, the keyboard looks to be the same as the original.

According to this leaked ASUS Eee PC roadmap slide, there are a few 701 SDs expected: 701, 701SD(30G HDD), 701SD, 701SD-4G. Interesting that one will sport a 30GB hard drive considering its SD tagged name. We don’t know any more about specs, other than that we are expecting it to run Intel Atom.

Unveiled in June, the Eee PC 1000 has a 10in 1024 x 600 display and is based on Intel’s Atom processor combined with 1GB memory.

Earlier models had an 8.9in screen or smaller, and were based on Celeron processor technology.

The Eee PC 1000 ships in two versions; a Linux-based model has a 40GB Flash solid state disk (SSD) for storage and costs £369, while the Eee PC 1000H runs Windows XP from an 80GB hard drive and costs £349.

Both models have a six-cell battery offering up to 7.5hours life, subject to usage conditions.

The company claims its desktop will be just 1 litre in volume, a rather odd measurement for a computer, but Asus are being rather vague on the exact dimensions of the upcoming hardware. The only details suggest that it will be as “slim as a paperback novel”. The desktop version of the Eee PC will be available in August, this summer and Asus will announce the price very soon.

Eee Box will run Windows XP Home on Intel’s Atom N270 processor at 1.6GHz, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, 80GB hard drive, Gigabit Ethernet connection and 802.11n Wi-Fi.

How about Linux operating system? Asus has said that it will add Linux to the mix later in the year. Hopefully!

The system is due to be unveiled at the major Computex show on June 3rd and will buck the Eee PC’s past use of flash memory for storage: the stock model will carry a 160GB hard drive that provides it six times as much capacity as the 20GB Eee PC 900. The EBOX will also hold 2GB of RAM, or twice as much as the newer Eee notebooks.

The company has previously mentioned that it plans to price the computer between $200 and $300, and in leaks is known to be selling the system in black and white colors. No mention has yet been made of offering a Windows version.

According to vnunet, Asus planning to offer Splashtop Linux on all motherboards.

Asus is to fit its entire range of motherboards with the company’s Express Gate version of Splashtop Linux.

Splashtop Linux boots from a Flash chip on the motherboard in a matter of seconds and is designed to run a small suite of applications including Firefox, Skype and instant messaging.

The Linux-based software will be extended immediately to the new P5Q Deluxe, P5Q-WS, P5Q3 Deluxe and P5Q-E series motherboards, and Asus has pledged to produce a further million Splashtop motherboards per month.

Part of Splashtop’s appeal is that it complements rather than replaces Windows, offering users the option to run a choice of operating systems.

Its low power consumption and Wi-Fi support also make it an attractive option for notebook manufacturers.

Asus, a long-term Linux stalwart, is widely seen as a pioneer of cut-down systems running the open source operating and has enjoyed commercial success with its increasingly popular Eee PC.

“In response to great user feedback our plan is to proliferate Express Gate across our entire motherboard product portfolio, starting with over one million motherboards per month,” said Joe Hsieh, general manager of Asus’ motherboard division.

“Consumers want to turn their PCs on and off like any other appliance, and Express Gate has made that possible.”
