How To Speed Up Windows XP

Written by Planet Lowyat on April 8, 2008 – 11:40 pm -

I’ve just finished tweak my laptop running Microsoft Windows XP professional SP2 and I would like to share my experience here because it worked perfectly.

I know this is an old story and you can easily found tons of similar tutorial or guide from any search engine such as CNET, 10 Simple Ways to Speed Up Windows XP, Speed Up Windows XP, 23 Ways To Speed WinXP Without Defrag and many others.

I’m strongly believed hard disk defragment is the main key point for speed up Windows XP. Personally I use Auslogics Disk Defrag and TuneXP.

For Auslogics Disk Defrag,

  • download
  • install
  • run disk defrag

That’s simple.

For Tune XP,

  • download
  • install
  • click Memory and file system
  • Enable accelerate DLL unloading
  • Enable faster shutdown
  • Enable file allocation size tweak
  • Enable optimize prefetch
  • Enable increase NTFS performance
  • Click Hardware
  • Enable UDMA-66
  • Enable increase CPU priority
  • Enable increasing USB polling interval
  • Enable speed up windows IRQ handling

Beside these 2 tools, I would suggest you should look at others tips such as:

Written by Planet Lowyat on January 26, 2008 – 12:30 am -

Personally I would preferred to use keyboard shortcuts instead of mouse. In fact, you may said you can save a lot of time using mouse for certain task. In some cases, you must know the right keys to push to do what you need to do much more faster.

There are some required VMware keyboard shortcuts you should know:

Ctrl+B - Power on the Virtual Machine
Ctrl+D - Edit the Virtual Machine Settings
Ctrl+E - Power off the Virtual Machine
Ctrl+G - Grab input from mouse & keyboard
Ctrl+N - Create a new Virtual Machine
Ctrl+O - Open a Virtual Machine
Ctrl+P - Edit User Preferences
Ctrl+R - Reset Virtual Machine
Ctrl+Z - Suspend the Virtual Machine
Ctrl+F4 - Close the selected Virtual Machine
Ctrl+Alt - Return to normal(windowed) mode
Ctrl+Alt+Enter - Switch to Full Screen Mode

Written by Planet Lowyat on January 25, 2008 – 6:50 pm -

Microsoft Windows XP or Vista control panel can adjust and tweak Windows’ appearance, performance, network connections, security, power, hardware settings and etc.

But to access the Windows Control Panel, you need to navigate through the Start menu or create a shortcut on your computer desktop. Just like an executable or programs file, Control panel applets can easily be launch from the ‘run‘ command. Again, there is no difference with opening items from the Windows Control Panel, but this can save several steps from navigate through the Start menu.

For example, to launch Add New Hardware Wizard, just type hdwwiz.cpl in the run command field and click OK.
