Yesterday one of the TMnet Streamyx contractor went to my house checking for my streamyx problem and during our discussion he was told me about the ADSL Modem SNR Margin.

Basically the SNR margin is the amount of signal your line can see as opposed to how much noise it can hear. The higher your SNR figure then the better your line quality and therefore a higher chance of getting faster internet speeds.

I found the figure as below on Lowyat Forum:
6dB or below is bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with no synch problems
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

Look at the number which I get = “31″.

The contractor told me that he never see SRN Margin above 40 so far and if you’re lucky you can get 30 and above. Am I lucky?

Again he advised me to get ADSL modem with ADSL 2+ features for better performance. Too bad I’m still having an old D-Link ADSL modem which is only have ‘multi-mode’, ‘G.dmt’, ‘G.lite’ and ‘ T1.413′ Somehow multi-mode will not work in my new place here.

He tested with his ADSL 2+ modem using TMnet Speedometer and he is getting >1200 Kbits per sec consistently and my old D-Link modem getting around 800 – 1099 Kbits per sec only.

Believe it or not? How about you?

What? Comcast Offers 50 Mbps Residential Speeds.

Comcast Corp. will start offering faster Internet services in Minnesota’s Twin Cities region on Thursday, with plans to extend that type of next-generation system to its entire service area by 2010. The new service will use the DOCSIS 3.0 standard, which is nearing ratification.

The $150-a-month offering for residential customers costs about triple Comcast’s priciest option to date and likely will appeal only to heavy users of online music, movies and other large Internet files.

“A decade ago we couldn’t even conceive of … YouTube,” Google Inc.’s video-sharing service, said Greg Butz, Comcast’s vice president for marketing and product development. “We hope that this platform we’re building will drive and create that next-level invention and drag with it a broad array of customers.”

With the faster service, a customer could download a 4 gigabyte high-definition movie in about 10 minutes, compared with about an hour at previous speeds.

Comcast will also be offering up to 50 Mbps for downloading, or receiving, files. Uploading, or sending, files will be at up to 5 Mbps. The monthly $150 price is available only to residential customers; small businesses will have to pay $200 for a package that includes additional technical support and security software.

What is the fastest broadband speed in Malaysia so far? 4 Mbps from TMnet? Probably we can reach the similar seed another decade. Check Malaysia Broadband providers list here.
