Linksys Brand May Disappear Soon

Written by Planet Lowyat on April 17, 2008 – 12:08 am -

Cisco’s Linksys brand may disappear sooner than expected, according to a top executive for small business at the company.

The company sells networking gear for small and medium-sized businesses under both the Cisco and Linksys brands, which has created some confusion, vice president of SMB Solutions Marketing Rick Moran acknowledged on Monday. Linksys was a successful vendor of home and SMB networking gear that Cisco acquired in 2003. There are routers, wireless LANs and other products under both brands that are aimed at small businesses.

Chairman and CEO John Chambers said last year at an event in Europe, captured in a YouTube video, that Linksys would disappear under the Cisco brand over time. Linksys followed up by saying its brand wasn’t going anywhere in the near term.

Cisco had already moved to allow its SMB channel partners to sell both Cisco and Linksys products, starting about a year ago, but in the process found out most of them didn’t want to carry both, Moran said. Those that sold Cisco gear weren’t interested in selling the simpler Linksys products because they wanted to sell their customers system integration services, and Linksys resellers were more geared toward selling individual products, he said.

Windows XP SP3 Release Dates

Written by Planet Lowyat on April 17, 2008 – 12:02 am -

According to close source, Microsoft Windows XP SP3 Release Dates will be:

  • April 14, 2008: Support is available for the release version of Service Pack 3 for Windows XP
  • April 21, 2008: Original Equipment Manufacturers, Volume License, Connect, and MSDN and TechNet subscribers
  • April 29, 2008: Microsoft Update, Windows Update, Download Center
  • June 10, 2008: Automatic Updates

The automatic updates won’t land until June. I believed his delay should give system administrators an ample amount of time to prepare for the upgrade or simply come up with an excuse for when things go awry.

Microsoft planning its own retail stores?

Written by Planet Lowyat on April 15, 2008 – 12:48 am -

Dell is going to retail, Apple very good in retail and now Microsoft planning its own retail stores?

According to Fudzilla close source to Microsoft, they wants to open and create many retail shops dedicated exclusive to Microsoft and its products.

This is something that Apple did with its many Apple retail stores around the world. Microsoft will put its retail people in the shops with hope that these skilled people will be able to show the true Microsoft experience.

We can only guess that the shop will be filled with lot of software, but it’s likely to include some peripheral stuff such as keyboards and mice as well as some MP3 Zune players. You can count on some computers, but the last paragraph is something we suspect not something that has been confirmed.
