Written by Planet Lowyat on March 26, 2008 – 11:39 pm -
I was looking for How to Install Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V for some time and finally I found here.
This page discusses the Hyper-V Release Candidate (RC). The information in this article is provided as is and is subject to change without notice. No formal product support is available from Microsoft for this beta release of this feature.
- Prerequisites
- Pre-installation Steps for Migrating from the Beta
- Enabling the Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V role
- Migrating from Hyper-V Beta to RC
- Managing Hyper-V via MMC
- Recommended Configuration for Guest OS
- Operating System Availability
- Recommended Hardware Devices
- Partner Tested Hardware
- Removing Hyper-V
PrerequisitesThe Release Candidate for Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V is only available for x64 editions of Windows Server 2008 RTM. If you are using a version of Windows Server 2008 that is pre-RTM, you will need to perform a clean install of Windows Server 2008 RTM x64 edition on your host system. Hyper-V cannot be enabled on systems running inside virtual machines or on x86 versions of Windows Server 2008.
The full set of prerequisites for installing Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 will be published separately closer to RTM. The RC release of Hyper-V is available with Windows Server 2008 x64 editions. Hyper-V requires an x64-based processor, hardware-assisted virtualization, and hardware data execution protection. For the RC release, a maximum of sixteen logical processors are tested.
Pre-installation Steps for Migrating from the Beta
If you had previously installed the Beta of Hyper-V on Windows Server 2008 RTM, the following steps are recommended for moving to the RC version of Hyper-V:
- Take a backup of all your Virtual Hard Disks (VHDs) once you have shutdown the virtual machines.
- Take a note of all of the Virtual Machine (VM) configuration settings such as storage configuration, memory allocations, etc. You will need to re-create the virtual machine settings as these are not compatible with the RC version.
- Take a backup of all your data on the system.
- Install the updates from Download Center or Windows Update (available post March 25, 2008) for the RC version. As mentioned above the RC update package will only install on RTM version Windows Server 2008. Reboot as requested.

Sayonara, Microsoft Exchange
Written by Planet Lowyat on March 26, 2008 – 11:13 pm -
If you like Microsoft’s Outlook e-mail client software but hate the expense of licensing and running Exchange Server, Cemaphore Systems has a proposition for you: a subscription service that effectively lets people dump Exchange in favor of Google’s cloud-computing infrastructure.
The product, called Mailshadow for Google Apps, or MailShadow G, is being made available in a beta test version on Wednesday, according to the company. Cemaphore says the product ultimately will be licensed via a monthly subscription fee.

Touch Screen Asus Eee PCs
Written by Planet Lowyat on March 26, 2008 – 12:21 am -
According to Jerry Shen, president of Asustek, stating in January that the company will not implement a touch screen panel option in the company’s next-generation Eee PCs.
The panel makers noted that resistive touch screen panel technology is more mature compared to capacitive touch screen technology for medium-size panel applications. The additional cost of implementing touch-screen panels and related ICs for next-generation Eee PCs is expected to be about US$10, the panel makers added.

Intel Offering Low-Watt Xeons
Written by Planet Lowyat on March 25, 2008 – 11:15 pm -The chip maker - Intel is adding a pair of 50-watt quad-core Xeons to its 45-nanometer Penryn line.
Intel is expanding its lineup of 45-nanometer processors with a pair of quad-core Xeon chips that run at 50 watts, announced March 25.
The two new Xeons, the L5410 and the L5420, now give the company more than 35 different microprocessors within its Penryn family of 45-nm chips. Intel first introduced this line of processors in November.
In a meeting earlier this month, CEO Paul Otellini said Intel has already shipped 4 million Penryn processors and will have 72 different models for servers and PCs by year’s end.
These Xeons give Intel’s customers, especially those in the financial sector, a choice of low-watt processors for two-socket servers and workstations within the Penryn family. Previously, Intel offered a range of 45-nm processors with thermal envelopes that ran between 80 and 150 watts.
In addition to the lower-watt Xeons, Intel will roll out a 40-watt, dual-core Penryn processor in April with a clock speed of 3GHz, 6MB of L2 cache and a 1333MHz front side bus (FSB).
The Xeon L5410 has a clock speed of 2.33 GHz and the L5420 has a clock speed of 2.5GHz. Both chips offer 12MB of L2 cache and a 1333MHz FSB. The Xeon L5410 will sell for $320 per 1,000 units shipped, while the L5420 will sell for $380, according to Intel.
